Special Interest Session
Operational Design Domains (ODDs) are fundamental to safe automated driving, yet current implementations remain largely static, vehicle-centric and fragmented across Europe. As Connected and Automated Mobility (CCAM) advances toward large-scale deployment, ODDs must evolve into adaptive, interoperable and infrastructure-supported ecosystems capable of addressing real-world variability, degraded conditions and cross-border operational complexity. This session brings together leading European initiatives to demonstrate how vehicle intelligence, infrastructure-based sensing and enabling technology stacks can extend and strengthen ODDs. Advances in Safe System engineering and AI-based behaviour modelling will be presented alongside federated digital twin environments that enable harmonised scenario development and scalable validation. In parallel, GNSS-enabled road condition services, cooperative sensing approaches and edge-AI infrastructures illustrate how resilient data pipelines and real-world demonstrators can enhance safety, traffic efficiency and operational continuity. By integrating standardised data services, digital twins and energy-efficient electronics platforms, intelligent infrastructure can complement onboard perception when vehicle sensing capabilities reach their limits. The panel will explore how harmonisation, certification frameworks, technology readiness and stakeholder cooperation must converge to enable adaptive ODDs across Europe. Through interactive discussion, the session aims to identify the key technical, regulatory and governance priorities required to deploy safe, resilient and scalable CCAM services supported by intelligent infrastructure.
