Co-Created Session
"This session explores how the principles of universal design – design that is usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialised solutions – can be meaningfully applied in the transport domain. Rather than framing inclusive mobility as designing for “others”, the session proposes a shift in perspective: inclusivity is about designing for all of us — across a lifetime, across abilities, and within the real-world conditions in which mobility actually takes place.
We were all children once, many of us care for others, and anyone can feel vulnerable when public space is poorly designed, unsafe, or exclusionary. As people age, their physical, sensory, and cognitive abilities often evolve, and many individuals will experience temporary or situational disability at some point, for example due to injury, illness, pregnancy, or caregiving responsibilities. These everyday realities underscore why inclusivity must be treated as a core design feature, not an exception.
Speakers will examine how universal design can enhance safety, accessibility, ease of use, comfort, and affordability in public transport – the backbone of the mobility system, while also addressing how these principles extend into the wider street environment. Complementary perspectives from active and shared mobility will demonstrate how inclusive design across modes can enable seamless, safe, and comfortable journeys for all users, regardless of age, gender, or ability.
