Special Interest Session, Safety and resilience through intelligent systems
Special Interest Session SIS 60 11:45 > 12:45 SIS 60 Data-driven road intelligence: Redefining safety and asset management in urban and rural networks ÇAMLICA Special Interest Session

European road networks are increasingly shifting towards predictive, data-driven infrastructure management, deploying V2X connectivity, AI-based analytics, and digital twins to improve road safety and efficiency. These emerging solutions support ADAS performance assessment, adaptive maintenance workflows, low-cost safety interventions, and proactive risk warning, ultimately contributing to safer conditions and reduced fatalities for all users. Beyond technical feasibility, public authorities require structured and measurable safety criteria, and interoperable data frameworks that support sustained infrastructure decisions under real-world constraints - particularly in the context of the EU Road Safety Policy Framework 2030 and Vision Zero ambitions, and across the often under-addressed secondary and rural road networks where fatality rates remain disproportionately high. This session outlines insights and lessons learnt from experimentation in European projects EvoRoads, iDriving and CAMBER, exploring operational and institutional factors and conditions for long-term policy uptake, what makes safety-oriented ITS solutions decision-ready and transferable beyond replication.
