SIS 56 AI- based tools for situational awareness and traffic safety in Europe

29 April 2026
Special Interest Session, Safety and resilience through intelligent systems
Special Interest Session SIS 56 10:30 > 11:30 SIS 56 AI- based tools for situational awareness and traffic safety in Europe MAÇKA Special Interest Session

From Cooperative and Collective Awareness in Highly Automated Driving for safety and resilience in CCAM to detecting occluded objects and vulnerable road users and predicting their trajectories, the challenge of having a ‘clear view’ on the road is faced by both connected and automated vehicle manufacturers and Tier 1s as well as Traffic Management operators of mixed-traffic (co-existence of multiple levels of automation on the road network) alike. EU funded research is focussing on developing AI based mechanisms to support the collection and integration of data from vehicles, infrastructure and other sources in order to (re)create the complex traffic road network realities that vehicles and users find themselves in. Advanced capabilities for real-time collection and integration of mobility data can enable traffic safety and optimise infrastructure asset management at the highways and urban environments while AI tools, such as digital twins offer a virtual, real-time replica of physical road networks supporting the process of simulating and analysing traffic management scenarios and traffic prediction with the goal to help Traffic management operators to optimize traffic flow. Multi-sensor data from sensors, cameras, LIDAR, traffic information platforms and more are fused into AI -powered problem solving solutions, allowing traffic management operators to take proactive data-based safety -related decisions. The Session will discuss current EU -funded research on AI aided situational awareness tools and how innovative solutions on situational awareness are currently deployed in urban and motorway environments.
