Despite great strides in safety over the last 20 years due to the introduction of intelligent hardware and software as part of intelligent transportation systems programs, road safety remains a critical global concern, with millions killed and injured every year as a result of road accidents. More than ever, digital tools and smart hardware are transforming the understanding and management of transportation networks, offering the potential for more comprehensive, real-time insights into traffic conditions, leading to proactive and more effective actions.

This Special Future Session (SFS) aims to show that continous investments in digitalization and advanced technology are imperative to accelerate progress toward the EU's target of halving road fatalities and serious injuries by 2030. It is also crucial to secure operational resilience by facilitating smart crisis response and climate readiness across the transport system.

Furthermore, technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced structural health monitoring are key to long-term sustainability by enabling predictive maintenance and optimizing asset durability, reducing future costs and risks.

Strategic financial support from the EU, such as the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), is instrumental in deploying this ITS infrastructure and ensuring the technical harmonization necessary for seamless, interoperable services across European borders. European’s experience underscores that sustained investment in digital leadership is essential to translate ambitious safety goals into resilient, measurable outcomes.
