SIS 44 Urgency for connected and intelligent mobility deployments improving safety for vulnerable road users

28 April 2026
Special Interest Session, Safety and resilience through intelligent systems
Special Interest Session SIS 44 16:45 > 17:45 SIS 44 Urgency for connected and intelligent mobility deployments improving safety for vulnerable road users YILDIZ 1 Special Interest Session

In 2024, around 20.000 people in the European Union (EU) died in road crashes, while in 2021 it was 19,900, in 2022 around 22,600 and in 2023 approx. 20400, which brings the figure more or less back to where it was in 2019.Especially vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as pedestrians and two-wheeler vehicle causing a significant increase. There is still a lot that must be done if we are to achieve our ambitious targets of halving the number of traffic fatalities in the EU by 2030 and eliminating them altogether by 2050, if possible. It is very important to use all available opportunities to further improve road safety. Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication combined with artificial intelligence (AI) employing sensor data fused from different sources like vehicles, road infrastructure and cloud-based services, are regarded as essential technologies to support this goal. As an interactive communication system, V2X compliments the capabilities of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) towards automated driving (AD) and allows the inclusion of distributed computational resources to help driving and traffic management decisions.
The purpose of this session is to provide an update of recent developments regarding the C-ITS deployments in terms of their potential significant reduction of severe accidents and fatalities. The considered applications are focused on vulnerable road users (VRU) such as cyclists and pedestrians. We are also looking into measures and programs from other regions to motivate more necessary European activities. This subject is more important than ever these days.
