SIS 42 Driving the future of multimodal traffic management: EU innovations for sustainable and resilient mobility

28 April 2026
Special Interest Session, Multimodal mobility system management
Special Interest Session SIS 42 16:45 > 17:45 SIS 42 Driving the future of multimodal traffic management: EU innovations for sustainable and resilient mobility BEYLERBEYI 1 Special Interest Session

European cities are accelerating their transition toward cleaner, safer, and more efficient mobility systems. This shift introduces challenges for managing multimodal transport networks, requiring solutions that enhance sustainability, strengthen integration between passenger and freight flows, and improve adaptability and resilience during disruptions.Technologies such as AI, digital twins, and CAM serve as powerful enablers, offering advanced capabilities for prediction, coordination, and real-time decision-support. Building upon the collaborative work of the Multimodal Traffic Management Cluster, this session provides insights from three EU-funded projects, ACUMEN, SYNCHROMODE,and DELPHI, each aligned with one of the session’s thematic pillars:1.Integrating AI tools in MTM:Advanced analytics and decision-support approaches for assessing and reducing externalities in management systems,2.Integration of Passenger and Freight Networks:Solutions harmonizing multimodal data, shared infrastructures, and operational coordination,3.Network Adaptability and Resilience:Methods ensuring robust and continuous operations under evolving mobility demands and disruptions. AI, predictive analytics, and digital-twins act as horizontal enablers across all pillars. The session also introduces two new initiatives (FEDORA and MODALSHIFT) which extend the vision toward federated data exchange, advanced digital twins, behaviour-support tools, and scalable multimodal decision-making. Designed for both industry and research audiences, the session combines focused presentations with interactive discussion. It will showcase actual results from applying advanced solutions across the projects’ case studies, demonstrating their practical value and real-world impact.Participants will gain actionable insights on deployment pathways, sustainability-outcomes, technical enablers, and policy considerations shaping the next generation of integrated and future-proof multimodal transport systems in Europe.
