This session will examine the challenges, opportunities, and gaps in advancing connectivity and digitalisation across road, air, waterborne, and rail transport. As Europe moves towards a seamlessly integrated and sustainable mobility ecosystem, ensuring that each mode benefits equitably from advanced communication technologies is essential.
The discussion will focus on how next-generation networks, including 5G evolution and 6G, AI-driven data systems, and edge computing, can address persistent challenges such as interoperability, continuity of service, latency, and coverage. Participants from policy, industry, and research will assess how these technologies can support automation, efficient data exchange, and coordinated multimodal operations.
By identifying cross-modal challenges and shared opportunities, the session aims to highlight where alignment between the transport and communications sectors is most urgently needed. It will also explore mechanisms for collaboration, standardisation, and investment that can accelerate deployment and maximise societal and environmental benefits.
Ultimately, the session will outline how advanced connectivity can serve as a unifying backbone for Europe’s Road, air, waterborne, and rail systems enabling resilient, intelligent, and sustainable multimodal mobility.
