SIS 35 Role of AI in future traffic management

28 April 2026
Special Interest Session, Multimodal mobility system management
Special Interest Session SIS 35 15:30 > 16:30 SIS 35 Role of AI in future traffic management ÜSKÜDAR 3 Special Interest Session

This session will explore the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in next-generation traffic management and urban mobility systems. As cities face growing congestion, increased travel demand, and rising emissions, new ITS-based AI solutions have become essential to improving efficiency, safety, and sustainability. The session will focus on real-world AI applications currently being developed and deployed, including machine-learning-based anomaly detection, adaptive traffic control, predictive analytics, multimodal mobility optimisation, and data-driven congestion mitigation strategies. The discussion will highlight how large-scale data sources—such as traffic sensors, floating car data (FCD), probe vehicle feeds, and air-quality indicators—can be fused to build integrated, intelligent mobility platforms. Speakers will present innovative approaches that leverage deep learning, real-time analytics, and advanced communication systems to support smart mobility operations. Additionally, the session will address ethical, operational, and implementation challenges, covering data quality, system scalability, privacy considerations, and the need for cross-sector collaboration. By bringing together experts from industry, academia, and public agencies, this session aims to demonstrate the practical benefits of AI-enabled traffic management and provide insights into future research, deployment pathways, and policy implications for sustainable urban mobility.
