SIS 34 Closing the safety loop for active mobility: Virtuous and vicious cycles in urban cycling networks

28 April 2026
Special Interest Session, Safety and resilience through intelligent systems
Special Interest Session SIS 34 15:30 > 16:30 SIS 34 Closing the safety loop for active mobility: Virtuous and vicious cycles in urban cycling networks EMIRGAN 1 Special Interest Session

The goal of this session is to explore strategies to enhance cycling safety in urban networks through infrastructure analysis and improvement. We will challenge myths surrounding Vision Zero and encourage participants to think beyond traditional road safety for VRUs. The session will focus on how safe infrastructure affects user safety perception, crucial for increasing the modal share of active mobility and addressing mobility poverty. Strengthening perceived safety allows children, elderly, and women, disproportionately affected by low safety perception, to feel confident using bicycles. We will show how infrastructure assessment and targeted interventions influence cyclist behaviour, network usage, and safety outcomes, drawing insights from multiple mobility contexts. Decision-makers from Madrid and Istanbul will share strategy roadmaps and predictive methodologies applied locally to expand active mobility. It will emphasize AI-driven predictive analytics and data-driven decision-support platforms to identify high-risk segments, simulate interventions, and optimize investments, enabling cities to anticipate risks and prioritize cost-effective actions. The purpose is not to showcase best practices from already bike-friendly cities but to present intelligent systems, and methodologies cities are using to become bike-friendly. The innovation perspective will be represented by ERTICO and FACTUAL, highlighting the Lane Patrol platform and AI techniques developed within SMARTIN project.
