Special Interest Session, Safety and resilience through intelligent systems
Special Interest Session SIS 29 14:00 > 15:00 SIS 29 How cities are using AI to keep bus zones clear for buses not cars EMIRGAN 1 Special Interest Session

Unauthorized vehicles in bus lanes and bus stops cause significant disruptions and safety hazards for public transport riders. Obstructing bus lanes slows service, preventing riders from reaching their destinations on time. Blocked bus stops force riders to navigate dangerous obstacle courses in active traffic, making safe deployment of wheelchair access ramps impossible. Recognizing the urgency of this problem – and the inadequacy of manual and fixed camera enforcement to change driver behavior – Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) conducted a pilot with Hayden AI utilizing bus-mounted, computer vision-powered technology to detect parking and moving violations in bus zones. The pilot revealed chronic misuse of bus zones along two TMB bus lines, such as clusters of violations that caused bus delays of approximately 4 to 15 minutes, highlighting how intelligent, automated enforcement systems can detect violations, change driver behavior, and ultimately improve roadway safety and transit reliability. At this session, learn about the results of TMB’s pilot, which was funded by a competitive award from the Barcelona Innova Lab mobility challenge; an earlier pilot conducted by the City of Braga in Portugal, focused on parking violation obstructing bus stops; and how this technology is being used in cities like New York.
