SIS 22 Decarbonising inland & rail logistics with automation

28 April 2026
Special Interest Session, Smart and sustainable logistics in the digital era
Special Interest Session SIS 22 10:30 > 11:30 SIS 22 Decarbonising inland & rail logistics with automation HAMIDYE Special Interest Session

Decarbonising freight transport is central to Europe’s climate ambitions, yet the shift to greener modes such as inland waterways and rail continues to face persistent obstacles. Despite their recognised efficiency and sustainability, these modes struggle with fragmented digitalisation, limited interoperability, and the high costs of modernisation. At the same time, the pressure to reduce emissions requires not only the deployment of clean propulsion technologies but also the adoption of automation and intelligent systems capable of optimising operations, reducing inefficiencies, and making rail and waterways more attractive to shippers and logistics providers. This session will explore how advances in automation, data-driven optimisation, and digital governance can transform inland and rail freight into the backbone of sustainable supply chains. By examining innovations such as automated handling systems, digital twins, real-time monitoring, and smart governance frameworks, the discussion will highlight how technology and policy together can unlock new levels of efficiency, resilience, and decarbonisation. Featuring exponents from the latest European projects (Keystone, Hologistics and Ikigai), the session will also provide exclusive insights into ongoing pilots and cutting-edge developments, ensuring participants gain a first-hand view of the most recent advances in this field. <scribe-shadow data-crx="okfkdaglfjjjfefdcppliegebpoegaii" id="crxjs-ext" style="position: fixed; width: 0px; height: 0px; top: 0px; left: 0px; z-index: 2147483647; overflow: visible; visibility: visible;"></scribe-shadow>
