Since its launch in Amsterdam in 2017, the Data for Road Safety (www.dataforroadsafety.eu) initiative has grown into a mature ecosystem using connected vehicle data to improve road safety. By uniting public authorities, service providers, and vehicle manufacturers, DFRS has turned the concept of “vehicles as sensors” into reality, enabling real-time safety-related traffic information (STRI) across Europe. The first DFRS Road Safety Impact Report confirms tangible benefits — faster response times and better hazard detection — proving connectivity saves lives and supports Europe’s Vision Zero goals. A major milestone in 2025 was the Memorandum of Understanding with Euro NCAP, ensuring that from January 2026, vehicles contributing to and using DFRS data will earn points toward Euro NCAP’s five-star safety rating. This incentive accelerates industry adoption and raises public awareness of connectivity as a core safety feature. Meanwhile, the European Commission is reviewing Delegated Regulation (EU) 886/2013 under the revised ITS Directive to align STRI delivery with today’s technologies and legal frameworks. A study report, expected by April 2026, will assess costs and benefits of potential changes. This SIS will focus on the review process, early insights from the study, and perspectives from DFRS and Euro NCAP partners.
