SIS 17 Space technology enabling Beyond Road modes and services

28 April 2026
Special Interest Session, Enhancing transport and mobility beyond the road
Special Interest Session SIS 17 09:00 > 10:00 SIS 17 Space technology enabling Beyond Road modes and services MAÇKA Special Interest Session

Delivering robust, sustainable mobility and logistics services that function seamlessly across all road environments—rural or urban—already presents a significant challenge for ITS connectivity. As best practices extend beyond road transport into other modes, existing challenges intensify and new ones emerge. These complexities create substantial opportunities for the ITS supply chain, fostering an ecosystem of innovators who can harness enabling technologies from space. The ongoing convergence of terrestrial and non-terrestrial (satellite) communications is shaping the evolution toward 6G. This future architecture promises to support ITS services in underserved areas, while enabling true multimodal coverage across air, rail, road, maritime, and emerging mobility domains. Concurrently, the fusion of space-based sensing (EO) with ground-based IoT sensing is accelerating innovation across the entire mobility spectrum. Space technologies, in particular, offer natural scalability beyond traditional road networks. This session will begin by illustrating how the integration of space and terrestrial technologies is already transforming innovation across multiple transport modes. It will then explore future innovation roadmaps, highlighting how ITS and space technologies will continue to converge, enabling cross-modal services where appropriate.  Speakers will present their work across air, rail, road, and maritime domains, showcasing the future of connected, intelligent, and resilient mobility.
