Artificial Intelligence is increasingly becoming a central element of strategic agendas for public authorities, industry, and research organisations. Yet the rapid expansion of interest risks creating an “AI bubble”, generating unrealistic expectations and eventual fatigue. To position Europe competitively and ensure that AI delivers real value for mobility management, it is essential to understand the full chain: the reasons behind the hype, the concrete developments taking place today, and the regulatory frameworks shaping deployment. This session brings together experts from the European Commission, ERTICO, academia, industry, and consultancy to jointly explore the why (why it matters), how (how it works), what (what it enables) of AI for mobility. Starting from the European strategic context, the panel will examine national best practices, emerging technological capabilities, and lessons from real deployments. To broaden the perspective and stimulate critical reflection, the session also includes insights from the United States, offering a comparative view on policy, regulation, and implementation. The objective of this SIS is to move beyond buzzwords and address the building blocks required for responsible, effective, and scalable AI adoption in mobility management and to identify the right questions Europe should be asking as it navigates the accelerating AI landscape.
