This session explores the transformative potential of advanced roadside sensing to create intelligent road networks that actively support both human drivers and autonomous vehicles. It emphasizes multimodal sensor fusion, predictive maintenance, and real-time safety interventions. While previous ITS Congress sessions have covered individual sensing technologies or specific applications, this session uniquely focuses on the integrated use of diverse sensing technologies to develop truly intelligent road ecosystems capable of adapting, learning, and evolving. As Europe nears the dawn of the autonomous vehicle era, our road infrastructure faces a significant transformation challenge. Traditional "passive" roads—simple stretches of asphalt designed for human-driven vehicles—are quickly becoming obsolete. The future demands "sentient" infrastructure that can see, hear, feel, and intelligently respond to the complex interactions among autonomous vehicles, connected cars, vulnerable road users, and environmental conditions.
