SIS 27 Human-centric approaches for safer and more trustworthy CCAM

28 April 2026
Special Interest Session, Safety and resilience through intelligent systems
Special Interest Session SIS 27 11:45 > 12:45 SIS 27 Human-centric approaches for safer and more trustworthy CCAM MAÇKA Special Interest Session

Connected, Cooperative and Automated Mobility (CCAM) offers the prospect of transport that is safer, more efficient, and more sustainable. But as these systems move from concept to reality, challenges emerge — how to detect and protect vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as cyclists and pedestrians in busy urban settings, how to ensure automated decisions feel natural and human-like, how to maintain resilient situational awareness through seamless information exchange between vehicles, infrastructure, and people, and how to design CCAM systems that respect and align with human principles.

This session will explore how European initiatives are addressing these challenges by placing people at the centre of technological progress. Participants will hear about advances in collective perception and decision-making algorithms powered by hybrid intelligence that help automated vehicles detect occluded objects and anticipate road users' movements. The discussion will also look at resilient Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication frameworks that enhance situational awareness and foster safer, more cooperative interactions between humans and automated systems. The session will further explore the human factors underpinning user acceptance of automated vehicles — examining how individual differences, cultural context, and perceived safety shape people's willingness to interact with and trust CCAM systems.

The conversation will highlight practical solutions emerging today and reflect on the steps needed for Europe to move toward broader, human-centred CCAM deployment.
